The Chinese New Year is now widely known as the Spring Festival because it starts from the beginning of the spring (the first of the twenty-four terms in coordination with the changes of Nature, which is a part of Lunar calendar in China). Its origin is too old to be traced. Several explanations are hanging aronud. However, nowadays, people agree that the character Nian which in modern Chinese means "year", was originally the name of a beast that began to pray on people the night before the beginning of a new year.

New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are celebrated as a family affair, a time of reunion and thanksgiving. It is as significant as Christmas in western countries. The celebration was traditionally highlighted with a religious ceremony given in honor of Heaven and Earth, the gods of the household and the family ancestors.

In Spring Festival, Chinese families will have a vegetarian dish called jai. Although the various ingredients in jai are root vegetables or fibrous vegetables, many people still attribute various superstitious aspects to them. Other foods include a whole fish, which is to represent togetherness and abundance, and a chicken for prosperity. The chicken must be presented with a head, tail and feet to symbolize completeness. Noodles should be uncut, as they represent long life.

Plates of the homemade dishes will be put on the table, and this is when we are enjoyingthe delicious food and watching the Spring Festival gala on TV. People usually talk about what's going on recently, and exchange some interesting life experiences.

The color, red, symbolizes good luck in China, and money in the envelop brings good fortune in the coming new year. In return, good wishes are given to the elders in the family.

Spring Festival marks the end of a passing year, and the beinning of a new year. We believe that a grand celebration helps us get rid of all the bad lucks and evil, and get all the very best in the coming new year. It is also about family reunion. Today, because of the stressful life style, we are all too busy with work, study, and other business, therefore we do not have so much time to accompany our parents and relatives. So every year, just before the Spring Festival, millions of people will forget about their work for a while and go home, no matter how far it is. They are longing for getting together with their family, and home is their sweetest and warmest destination.

-Is music important in traditional festivals?

Yes, absolutely. To be honest, I think traditional festivals are always accompanied by a certain type of music, for instance, whenever I think of the Chinese New Year, what comes to my mind is the ubiquitous happy songs about new beginnings and making more money. If you go shopping in the supermarket in China during the Spring Festival, you can definitely find that Andy Lau's famous song, called Gong Xi Fa Cai. Hence, music is a paramount factor in traditional festivals, just like in western countries, they will listen to songs from Mariah Carey during Christmas.

  -Are traditional festivals disappearing?

I don't think so, no, in my opinion, they are not disappearing but changing. Yes, more and more people don't like to celebrate them in the so-called traditional ways, as these days, most festivals have adopted a comercial air and turned into festivals of shopping.

Besides, some young people feel like there would be too much pressure to celebrate festivals with their families. Therefore, they decide to go travel solo or with friends. I'm pretty sure I am one of them, and I have to say, I do enjoy this way of celebrating festivals. And for your record, I still remember to send greetings and get presents for my family.

-Do children like to learn about traditional festivals?

From what I know, well, not so much. Kids are more concerned about where to travel to and what to eat during festivals, instead of learing about them. I think it has to do with the societal atmosphere. Why would kids care when they've witnessed loads and loads of promotions before and during the festival? You know, the gift money, the candies, the gifts, and the like are what kids ruminate about.

-Is it important for children to learn about traditional festivals at school?

Sure, it is definitely important. Children spend half of their time at school and it's definitely vital that they should learn something about the origins of their culture by knowing more about traditional festivals. I consider this as a part of history lessons. Schools can hold themed events to teach kids all the little details about all types of traditional festivals, and it sort of helps drag them away from the materialistic element of cultural festivals, which is so prevalent in today's society.
