吉尔伯特和磁场 |
Content Review William Gilbert and Magnetism A There was no single movement when science replaced mysticism as the means of explaining the world, but the lives of two men circumscribed this transition. They are Galileo Galilei and William Gilbert. Gilbert is less well-known than he deserves.
B The birth of Gilbert predated that Galilei, so at least chronologically speaking, Gilbert deserves the title of first scientist. Gilbert was born in 1544. He graduated from Royal College of Physicians.
C Gilbert was an eminent physician and culminated in election of president in 1599. In the following year, he was appointed as the personal physician of Queen ElizabethⅠ. He died in December 1603.
D In spite of his fame as a physician, Gilbert made his mark on science in physics because of his thorough investigation in magnetism. Firstly he studied chemistry, then he shifted to electricity and magnetism. His masterpiece is Concerning Magnetism.
E His work is comprehensive and thorough. He disproved many mystical beliefs about magnetism. He invented the law of magnetic attraction and repulsion that are similar to what we today learn at school.
F Also his interest expanded, in a more speculative way, to heavens. He was a supporter of Copernican theories, but he also shone through his cons in his discussion.
G The most significant feature of Concerning Magnetism is not what he had discovered, but how he had discovered it. He is the founder of the experimental method in science.

滑石粉的工业用途 |
Content Review Industrial uses of Talc P1 Talc is used to produce a wide range of everyday products such as paper, painting and plastic. And there is always talc’s best known end use: for babies’ bottoms. But the surprising use of this remarkable mineral is in the food and agriculture industries.
P2 Take, for example, the chewing gum business. Each year, about 6,000 tonnes talc is needed in chewing gum manufacturers in Europe. It is still a small amount compared with total annual sales of talc. For the manufacturers, switching sources is not an easy option because the cost of change is high.
P3 How is talc used in the manufacture of chewing gum? There are four main components here. The most important of them is the gum base. It is the gum base which the chew are put in. Then the manufacturer adds sweeteners, softeners and flavorings. The talc is used as a filler. In the factory, talc is also used during the lamination and packing processes.
P4 For the past 20 years or so, Spanish have been taking advantage of talc to help them boost the amount of oil extracted from olives. Talc is utilized to treat the difficult olives, which is easily recognized since they produce a lot extra foam during the stirring with water. The oil lost when the waste water is disposed of into the soil. It need some time to biodegrade and may be harmful to the surrounding ecosystem.
P5 If you add some talc during the stirring process, it will absorb the fine solid of olives and so boost the amount. In addition, talc’s platey structure helps increase the size of the oil droplets liberated during the process, which can also improve the yield.
P6 Another example of talc’s new application is in the food and agriculture industries. Fruit crop protection is the first pioneer in US. Just like people, fruit can also suffer sunburned. “We just want to put a coat onto the fruit to protect them from the heat and sunburn.
P7 Talc is very hydrophobic, different from water. In order to get a viable product we need a wettable powder. It also has to break the surface tension of the cutin to make it had to wash off easily when the fruit is harvested. Nobody wants an apple that’s covered in talc.
P8 Talc’s application has reduced some fruit ‘s surface temperature and lowered the incidence of sunburn. Apple growers are the current target of Invelop® Maximum SPF although grape growers show more potential in the market.
Questions & Answers Questions 27-32 Classify the following uses of talc powder as referring to A Chewing gum manufacture B Olive oil extraction C Fruit crop protection 27. help reduce harm to the environment B 28. act as a barrier to harmful light C 29. increases the quantity of the product extraction B 30. requires alteration of talc’s characteristics C 31. makes handling the products easier C 32. combines with some certain additives A

重点话题Sample Answer |
Describe a school rule that you agree or disagree. You should say: What it is about Why it was made And explain the reasons why you agree or disagree.
Well, I totally disagree with the rule in our school that students are not allowed to order food off campus. The canteen in our school is the only place where meals are available. However, if I have to come clean, the food there is, I should say, not very satisfying. The taste is not that good, the price is not that economical and we always have to stand in line for 30 minutes for our food.
What is worse, we’ve only got one precious hour for lunch break during noon and have to spend 50 minutes or even more of it in the canteen waiting for a bite to eat. Imagine how frustrated we are when we sit down with chopsticks and bowls, then find we’ve run out of time to eat. If we were allowed to order food from outside of the campus, a lot of time would be saved. We only need to put in our orders during class breaks and then have our food delivered right to our seats. |
