Describe a time when you were stuck in a traffic jam

  You should say:

  • When it happened

  • Where you were stuck

  • What you did while waiting

  • And explain how you felt in the traffic jam

  01

  When it happened

  Example one:

It took place a couple of days ago. I clearly remember it was a terrible day as it was pouring down 下大雨 outside. I decided to stay tucked up in bed 窝床上watching my favourite tv series. However, after lunch, I got a phone call from a professor who told me I had to attend a meeting offline in the school. I reluctantly 不情愿地 set off 出发 in the rain.

  Example two:

It took place about a month ago. I clearly remember it was a sunny Sunday afternoon. After having woken up from a cat nap 午睡, I got a phone call from my friend who asked me to go for a coffee with her. As I had nothing to do, I jumped at the chance 抓住机会 and set off straight away 立刻.

  Example three:

It took place about a year ago. I vaguely 模糊地 remember it was a Friday afternoon. After having my last class, I went back home as usual. As my parents were busy working, I took a bus home.

  02

  Where you were stuck

  Example one:

The journey was going well, it was smooth and fast and we barely stopped at any lights. Then as we were passing the Shopping centre on the outskirts of the city we came to a grinding halt 急刹车. A car had broken down a few cars in front of us. It was only a two-way street so it was impossible to go around it.

  Example two:

Heavy rain always slows down the traffic in the city. In order to arrive on time, I set off 30 mins earlier. However, after being on the bus for just a few minutes, the bus came to a stop. There were vehicles everywhere. We started inching forward 慢慢前进 but very slowly. After a while, people started to get impatient and were honking their horns 按喇叭.

  Example three:

We got stuck in the traffic jam just as we hit the last intersection There had been a terrible car accident. Around 10 cars had rear-ended 追尾. Several of them had been pulled to the roadside while 2 were still in the middle of the road. Even though the traffic police did their best to clear the traffic, it still took about 30 mins to move past it.

  03

  What you did while waiting

Online & Offline

5w1h (when/where/ who/ why/ what/ how/ how much/ how often/ how long)

  Example one:

To pass the time I read a bit of my book. I was almost at the end of it so I was engrossed in 全神贯注于 the ending. Then I put some soothing 舒缓的 music on which was nice as it drowned out 淹没 the honking 喇叭声 and shouting from the cars next to me. We were stuck near a park so I decided to draw some pictures of what I could see out the window. Trees, flowers, people doing exercise.

  Example two:

At first, I tried to finish my assignments. However, I felt car sick 晕车 and the cramped 拥挤的 space was making me feel uncomfortable. Then I started chatting with the driver. He was a middle-aged man and was happy to chat with me. He told me about his life and I told him about mine. We actually had lots in common. He really helped kill time.

  04

How you felt in the traffic jam

  Negative 消极

  Example :

I can't stand them. They infuriate 激怒 me as I waste so much time. And you never know how long you will be stuck in a jam so it plays havoc with 毁坏 your plans. You have to either leave with plenty of time to spare or risk being late. I try to avoid rush hour 高峰期 whenever I can.

  Positive 积极

  Example one:

Well, no one likes being stuck in a traffic jam. But living in a big city, congestion is unavoidable. It is best to just accept it and try and make the most of the time 充分利用时间. For me, it is time I can just switch off 放空from work and do nothing.

  Example two:

Everyone around me was furious 生气的 and they were getting impatient. It didn't actually bother me as I had received a message from my friend, saying she was also stuck in traffic. As soon as I knew that, I didn't need to worry about being late. It was far better to be on an air-conditioned bus waiting for her rather than in the street.
