Describe an occasion that you lost something

  You should say:

  • What you lost

  • When and where you lost it

  • What you did to find it

  • And explain how you felt about it

  按大小来看,你可以丢一把小小的钥匙,也可以丢一个大大的行李箱;

  按价格来看,你可以丢一只名贵的包包,也可以丢一个不值钱的头绳;

  01

  What you lost

  Brand

  Example:

A thing that I lost was a really nice pen. It is from LAMY, my favorite brand. It was their newly-launched design which was really hard to get hold of 得到. They sold out in minutes.

  Price

  Example:

A thing that I lost was a pair of nice headphones. They were a good brand, so they were quite pricey 贵的 and worth about 2000 yuan.

  Appearance

  Example:

One thing that I lost was a USB stick U盘 which was relatively small. It was about half the size of my finger, so it was easy to lose.

  Function

  Example:

One thing that I lost was a pen translator 翻译笔. It is an amazing study tool given to me by my elder cousin. You can scan information on any printed text including books, newspapers and magazines and it translates it into any language in seconds. It is also very small, so it is very portable. I can easily carry it anywhere I want.

  02

  When and where you lost

Year-Month-Date-Hour

Year-Hour;Year-Date-Hour;Month-Date

  比如:在阐述"Month"时,我可以不说具体的几月。取而代之的是"暑假刚开始的时候";

  Example one:

I lost it about a year ago. I remember it was a miserable 糟糕的 Friday afternoon and I had decided to go to the library to revise, as my final exam was looming When I arrived I got out all my books and noticed that my pen wasn’t in my pencil case. I must have dropped it on the way to the library.

  Example two:

I lost it a couple of weeks ago. I remember it was a busy Monday morning. As I had hit the hay 睡觉 very late, I had slept in 睡过头. When I woke up, it was almost time for me to have my first class. After I quickly washed my face and brushed my teeth, I rushed out of my room and ran to the classroom. When my teacher asked me to do my presentation, I 翻找 through my bag looking for it but it wasn’t there. I panicked and realized in my haste to get ready I must have dropped it.

  03

What you did to find it

Online/Offline

  线上:朋友圈、微博、论坛等发帖搜寻;

5W1H (when/where/who/why/what/how much/ how often/ how long)

  Example one:

In order to find it, I went back and traced my steps. I also posted the details on our school website, as they have a lost & found section After two days, I got a phone call from a stranger who had found my lost USB on the street.

  Example two:

I was really stressed about losing my suitcase because It had never happened before. I wanted to do everything I could to get it back, so I pulled out all the stops I posted a message on my WeChat with all the information and asked my friends to repost 转发 it on their moments as well. I also called the airline company 航空公司 and asked if they could help me track 追踪 my suitcase. Fortunately, after a few hours a person had seen my message and contacted me via WeChat. Once he confirmed, I was the actual owner, he gave me the address to pick it up. I was so happy and offered him a reward but he told me it wasn’t necessary.

  Example three:

To try and find my book, I went to the Lost & Found office on the other side of the campus. However, there was no one there. While I was waiting for someone to come back, surprisingly, I got a phone call. A very gentle voice told me he had found my book. As I had written my phone number on the the first page of my book, he contacted me. As he lived quite close to me, I went to his place immediately and picked it up. I was so grateful to him for taking the time to contact me.

  Example four:

In order to find it, I tried every trick in the book. I left my personal information at the Lost and Found office, including all the details of my mobile phone. After waiting for several days, there was no information. Then my friend suggested that I check the school’s CCTV 监控. Even though it took me the whole day to look through all the videos, it paid off 努力有了回报 and I saw that my phone was picked up by a boy. Because of what he was wearing, I knew that he was a member of the school basketball team so I went to the basketball court to find him. However, he denied 否认 having it. Later on, I learnt that he had already sold my phone and spent all the money on a video game. I was furious 火冒三丈 and made a complaint to the school council 校委会. Reluctantly, he gave me the money back.

  PS:Example four

  04

  How you felt about it

  Example:

I was so annoyed that I had lost it as it was my favorite book. I remember it was so hard to get hold of 得到 it in the first place. I couldn't buy a new one as it sold out quickly but after searching I managed to find a second hand one. I was so pleased I had found a copy and cherished it. That is why losing it was so disappointing.

  Example one:

It was a great lesson for me, as I can be careless. I always leave stuff everywhere and then I have no idea where to find it when I need it. Now I have started to learn the importance of being organized and careful.

  Example two:

Even though the experience was very stressful and wasted my time, I still gained something from it. I made a new friend. Since he returned my suitcase to me, we have kept in touch online. He is always telling me to be more careful with my belongings as I might not be as lucky next time.

  Example three:

Even though the world is a beautiful place and full of kind-hearted people this experience taught me that there are still selfish and self-centered people who don't care about others out there. I was shocked when he denied having it, as we clearly saw him on the CCTV footage. At least in the end good prevailed 好的结果 but it has made me trust people less.
