Describe a contest/competition you would like to participat in

  You should say:

  • What the contest/competition is about

  • Where it will take place

  • When it will be held

  • And explain why you would like to take part in

5w1h (when/where/what/who(contestant/organizer)/why/how/ how much/ how often/ how long)/ popularity/ history/ requirement/ qualification/ easy or difficult/ how you know about it etc.

  01

  What the contest is about

  Popularity

  Example:

If it were possible, I would really like to participate in a math contest. It is a well-known international contest organized by Cambridge University. They created the contest to encourage young people to get excited about math and also inspire them to push their limits Since the first contest which was held about 20 years ago, it has taken off 受到欢迎 and every year it attracts thousands of students from all over the country.

  How you know about it

  Step one--

  Example :

Actually, I am not a very confident person but I would like to challenge myself to participate in a national painting competition. The first time I heard about it was when my friend showed me the brochure 小册子. But I didn’t show any interest in it until last month when my painting teacher mentioned it again and told us how great it would be to take part in it. I was intrigued 吸引. So I searched for loads of information about it online and decided to give it a try.

  Example :

Well, I would really like to take part in a music contest called The Voice of China. Even though it is open to the public, it is a tough audition (对演艺人员的)面试 and you are competing against thousands of other contestants 参赛者. It is also nerve-wracking 令人心惊胆寒的 as you have to sing in front of a huge audience. Only those who are truly talented will get through to the next stage

  02

  Where it will take place

  按主次来思考:它绝大多数情况下选择哪些地方比赛;偶尔也会选择怎样的地方;

  Example:

Normally they have the contest in big cities, like Shanghai and Beijing. These metropolises have everything the participants need while they come and stay in the city.

Occasionally, they choose smaller cities if the place is unique or special. Last year, people were surprised as it was held in a small coastal city called Zhoushan. All the contestants stayed in a five-star hotel next to the sea. The beautiful sea view helped them feel relaxed during the competition

  Example one:

To be honest, before the outbreak of the pandemic 疫情爆发, there were over 20 cities in China where you could take part in the competition. You just chose the city you wanted to go to. However, now all the contests are online. At first, organizers worried about people cheating but they designed some excellent technology to ensure this doesn't happen.

  Example two:

Actually, it will be held in different cities each year. Last year, it was in a big stadium in Shanghai. Even though they haven’t announced the city for this year, someone guessed it may be in my city. I am so excited as I think my city would be a great place to host the competition. I would help out in any way I could.

  03

  When it will be held

  Example:

According to what I know, it is held in March and September, as the seasons are more bearable. But with COVID-19 everything is up in the air I worry that this year, it will be cancelled like other contests. If it happened, I would be very depressed.

  Example two:

This year the contest will be held during the summer holiday. I still have enough time to get ready. I have heard it is a very challenging contest with a gruelling schedule Participants need to get up at the crack of dawn 早起 and compete for the whole day. Because of this, I think I need to prepare my mind and body ahead of the contest so I can stand a chance 有希望.

  04

Why you would like to take part in

  Opportunity

  Example:

Actually, the reason why I would like to take part in the competition is very simple. If I won first place 第一名, it would help my application for a place at a prestigious 有名望的 university.

Even though I am a diligent student, my school isn’t ranked very highly in China. As a result, it will be difficult to get a good place at a respected university, but if I win this prize, I will get a foot in the door For example, two years ago, a senior student won the prize and went on to receive a scholarship at one of the top universities in the country. His story motivates me and I will do everything I can to win this prize.

  Example two:

The reason why I want to take part in this competition is that it’s a good way to become famous and stand out from the crowd I am a small fish in the big pond It’s so hard for me to be noticed by others. But if I win the competition, my life will completely change. Everyone will see my talent and my name will come up in the conversations all the time. I think I will also be invited to perform at many events. How fabulous it would be.

  Social

  Example one:

There are so many reasons why I would like to take part in it. Firstly, I reckon it would be a great opportunity for me to validate 检验 my ability by competing with so many talented people. Even though I might not win a place I will know about my shortcomings and gain experience from others. Secondly, it would also be a good platform for me to make friends with like-minded 志趣相投的 people. Actually, it is hard for me to find someone who has the same hobbies as me, so the contest would be a great opportunity.

  Example two:

I decided to take part in the music contest because of one of the judges. His name is Jay Chow, a pop king in China. I am his biggest fan and have been for the last two decades. When I was young, I didn’t really know what I was doing and lacked direction but then I heard about him. He changed my outlook 观念 on life and taught me the importance of persistence. If I could see him in the competition, I would be over the moon He would give me energy and a spring in my step
