Describe a thing you did to learn another language
You should say:
• What language you learned
• What you did to learn the language
• How it helped you learn the language
• And explain how you felt about it
拿到这道题，很多同学会认为"选择讲一个什么语言"很重要。恰恰相反，这道题哪怕你讲英语我都不会来反对你，毕竟这道题的核心在于"Thing"。
也正是如此，你若想让自己的话题变得更有新意，你需要重点思考"Thing"的范围。
首先， "Thing"可以分为"虚拟物品"与"实际物品"。
○虚拟
它的范围包括：各类学习软件/ 网站/电视节目/广播等。
○实际
它的范围包括：各类学习类的实体工具/书本等。
其次，语言的学习又可以细分为"听说读写"或者"发音/词汇/语法/逻辑等"。
为此，我们可以把两者结合起来(以英语学习为例)：
○用于练习听力的工具
虚拟：英国广播电台app/ 英文电影/ 英文歌曲/ 英语节目/ YouTube etc.
实际：MP3/ 手机/ 电脑/ 录音机 etc.
○用于练习口语的工具
虚拟：外教上课app/ video games (受外国人青睐的)/ 英语配音软件 etc.
实际：录音机/ 线下外教课 etc.
○用于练习阅读/写作的工具
虚拟：英文阅读类app/英文文献类网站 etc.
实际：英文原版书/ 英文报纸 etc.
明确了"thing"的选择后后，我们就从小问题本身着手来明确下它们的细节拓展方向，这也是很多同学目前最大的问题。

此小问的拓展可参考上一篇《向长者学习的技能》(点击标题查看原文)。语言本身就是一种技能，为此，它们的维度拓展可以是一样的。
• Popularity 受欢迎程度
你需要进一步阐述它为什么受欢迎以及它怎样的受欢迎。除此之外，你也可以按时间线来说明其受欢迎程度的变化趋势，比如：从不受欢迎到受欢迎，以及其原因。
Example：
I have been learning English for over 20 years. It is a global language so learning it brings me lots of benefits not only in life but also in my study and work.
• How you know about it 你怎么知道的
任何一个语言都会有一个具体的认知过程，为此，我们可以将其细节具体展开：
step one: 最开始怎么知道的(谁告知的?从某处得知的?在某个时间段获悉的?)
step two: 最开始的印象(了解到哪些内容以及这些内容是否让你产生想要进一步了解的兴趣?)
step three: 若感兴趣，最终就决定去学习它。
Example：
A language I have learnt is Greek 希腊语. It isn’t a popular language and I only heard about it several years ago when my parents decided to expand their business to Greece. Because of this, learning the language became very important. Even though I wasn’t really keen, I decided to learn it as I wanted to help my parents.
• Easy or Difficult 简单还是难
我们在思考过程中，可以按"主次"或"时间线"进行答题。
-主次：绝大多数人认为(简单/难)-why/小部分人认为(简单/难)-why
-时间线：最开始我认为/后来我认为
Example：
A language I have learnt is Japanese. At first, I thought It was going to be a piece of cake, as it has so many similarities with my mother tongue. However, when I started to learn it, I found it was really tough and it was impossible for me to grasp 理解 by myself. Then my friend showed me some techniques and I made progress.

What you did to learn the language
此题拓展的方向取决于你具体选择的这个"Thing"是什么。
如若它涉及"老师"，比如：外教课。
我们的拓展方向等同于《向长者学习技能》的第二小问"who you learnt it from"。我们可以从"人"的范畴对其做进一步的细节拓展。比如：外貌/教育背景/年龄/性格等。
Example：
In order to learn the language, I tried every trick in the book 尝试尽各种办法, but the most effective way was having classes with a foreign tutor. My mum paid a fortune so I could have English classes in a language center where I met my tutor, Peter. He is a very gentle English man with a very posh London accent 漂亮的伦敦音. I had classes with him for almost three years before he went back to live in the UK.
如若它涉及除人外的任何东西，比如：app/website/ film/ book/ cartoon等。
我们可以从物品的维度对其进行细节拓展，或者你也可以单纯的从"How you know about it"出发，来说明你是怎么知道这个东西的，以及吸引你去使用的原因。
Example one：
I had no idea how to start learning Greek and it was hard to find a personal tutor to teach me, as I live in a small city. Then my friend highly recommended a language learning app, called Duolingo. It is a self-learning platform and offers various kinds of language classes. What impressed me the most is that they provide a tonne of free materials and the activities suit my learning style.
Example two：
My friend highly recommended watching Japanese animation. He said that it was a very effective way for him to pick up 不费力的学会 the language and now he can watch them without subtitles 字幕. I thought it sounded fun and interesting so I asked him to recommend some titles. He said that his favourite show is called One piece 海贼王 . I started watching it and loved it.

How it helped you learn the language
课程类：技巧+练习/ 课堂内容+阶段性测试
这不仅包括外教课程，也可以是软件里的自学课程。只要是课程，它的教学过程主要就是学习语言技巧，再是练习。除此之外，它可能也会匹配测试环节。
此解法也等同于《向年长的人学习技能》中的第三小问"how you learnt it"
Example one：
When I had classes with Peter, it was always very productive 高效的. Each class, he spent about 20 mins teaching me new phrases and sentence structures, usually from simple to difficult. He taught me step by step and told me how to use them correctly in different language contexts. After learning them, I practiced. He then pointed out all the mistakes I made and gave me advice and tips to improve.
Example two：
Duolingo is a very systematic 体系化的 language learning app. It is divided into different levels from basic to advanced. They usually start with a single word and then teach you how to put words together into a sentence. There are lots of practice tasks and you can hear the pronunciation. At the end of each level, there is a progress test so you can see how you are doing.
非课程类：模仿+练习
它包括了电影/书/动画片等。我们需要先找到它主要影响我们语言学习的哪个部分。比如： 视频类的可以让我们提升发音能力/听力能力/词汇理解能力等，为此，我们就可以从这些方面开始模仿和练习。
Example：
Watching animation was a very useful way for me to learn Japanese, as it helped me not only with my pronunciation but with my vocabulary too. I listened carefully to their pronunciation and then mimicked 模仿 it. Because of the type of show, the language was informal and I picked up so many useful phrases I can use on a day to day basis.

How you felt about it
任何的感受都可以有好有坏，为此，我们可以从该事物带来的好处以及坏处来思考。
外教课
好处：交流文化/ 增强开口力度/ 提升表达自信度
坏处：费钱/ 紧张
Example：
Even though having classes with a foreign tutor made me a bit nervous at first, I soon got used to it and after a while felt very relaxed talking to him. I felt calm and could answer all his questions. More importantly, thanks to him, I learnt so much about other cultures and traditions. Having classes with him was a real eye-opener 开拓视野.
软件/网站类
好处：随时随地/ 花费少/ 内容多样化
坏处：学习周期长/ 缺乏监督性
Example two：
Even though it was a long process for me to learn the language with this app, It worked for me because of the flexibility 灵活性 it offered. I didn’t need to physically go to classes and I could just pick it up when I had some free time. I could also use it anywhere, on the bus, in the park or hanging out on my sofa.

好处：有趣/ 有画面感，便于理解
坏处：容易被剧情带偏，而没有关注语言学习本身
Example three：
It was a very interesting and motivating way for me to learn Japanese. To be honest, I found it boring using more traditional techniques. However, animation motivated me to learn more. The vivid scenes and fascinating characters helped me better understand the whole story. To some extent, they also helped me remember some of the phrases easily as I could relate them to the story.
