Gone are the days when owning a car was a luxury. In modern age, a mushrooming number of people are buying and using their private cars. While cars have brought people tangible boons, I staunchly believe that such a development is ultimately detrimental to the environment.

Autos can definitely free people from inconvenience and discomfort in our quotidian life, saving heaps of time for people and elevating the quality of life. Compared with buses and subways packed with passengers, private cars are less crowded and better meet the townsman’s demand of more frequent egressions with higher quality. Apart from commuting by cars during the week, it is possible to drive to the supermarket on weekends and transport large quantities of daily necessities home. In addition, more private cars have allowed millions of people travel on their own. A self-driving tour, be it taking kids on a road trip or visiting family, adds endless spice to our lives.

In spite of the upsides brought by a higher rate of car ownership, downsides to the environment are more conspicuous. When people frequently drive cars, this accelerates the depletion of exhaustible fossil fuel, which induces the thorny issue of energy shortfalls. Also, the toxic fumes, such as sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide, released from the cars are the chief culprit of atmospheric contamination. Our life will be clouded by smog which undermines our living environment. Other than harmful gases, greenhouse hazes (i.e. carbon dioxide) exacerbate the global warming and then potentially trigger the negative change of global climate.
