Hometown (Part 1 topic) is a frequently tested topic in the speaking session of the IELTS test. It means the interviewer must have been extremely bored with monotonous answers, like I am from a beautiful city called Nanjing. It is a large city and it is the host city of the 2nd Youth Olympics this summer. So how do you make your answers more interesting or full of life? How do you in the conversation galvanizing the interlocutor’s auditory organs, which in this case are his or her ears? Take the hometown topic as an example. Ryan would organize the information into an account like this.
I was born in this city, the city where you currently have a job. I was raised and educated here. I probably don’t need to mention the name of this city, coz you must know it. But I believe the name you know, Nanjing, is just how it is commonly known and called. But natives call it a different way, they call it DA LAN JIN. Did you notice the difference?
At this point, if the interviewer signals that he/she wants to interrupt you, say this: Oh, did you wanna jump in and move on? Go ahead, please.
Otherwise, you should finish your answer: I’ll repeat it, DA LAN JIN. The pronunciation features its phonetic characteristics of the city’s dialect. First, you might have noticed the different intonation when it is pronounced in dialect. Another punch line is the locals in general have difficulty distinguishing between the two consonant phonemes ‘L’ and ‘N’.
