Secondly, it isadvisable that a writer makes the most of his or her first language whileproducing a report or an essay in the target language, in this case, inEnglish. There is scientific evidence showing that thinking in the targetlanguage is neurologically too demanding, thereby resulting in cognitiveoverload in most cases, and the text quality normally is low. This applies tothe majority of Chinese learner writers, whose proficiency of English languageis more or less distant from competent.
Given this scientificfact, my humble suggestion is to follow four steps when writing for IELTS. Theinitial step is to clarify the intended meaning in Chinese, meaning to think inChinese when generating ideas. The next step is to simplify the difficulties, which is to in simple words elaborate and explain highly compact language, forinstance idioms. In this step, the writer should also use Chinese. In the nextstep, the writer converts (not translates literally) simple Chinese into plainEnglish. This is where the target language gets involved for the first time inthe entire process and all the information is put in writing in asemi-organized fashion. The final leap is to polish the raw product, to makethe final production presentable to the reader. It means that the writer use propersentence structure in which intended information can be fit, and use moreprecise lexical resource to convey the intended meaning.
The four steps can beshortened into fewer steps, with the increase of the writer’s writing proficiency. However, even a highly-proficient writer can hardly skip the first and the laststep, and the second and third steps usually take place in subconscious in aflash.
