Handwriting (Task 1 topic) is an interesting topic, and Ryan has never been asked questions about handwriting, though Ryan’s handwriting in both Chinese and English looks great. About handwriting, there are so many things Ryan has to share with you. Before we get started, learn two pairs of words about handwriting: calligraphy, cacography, legible, illegible. Look them up in the dictionary.
My handwriting is awesome, I don’t like to brag about it, but I practiced traditional Chinese calligraphy for seven years non-stop when I was little. Then when I grew up to university age, I went to a teacher’s college, trained to be a language teacher, I practiced for another four years, both English calligraphy and Chinese calligraphy, coz I was trained to be a teacher of English language. But I prefer typing to writing these days. It is an obvious trend that people nowadays type instead of hand write. I haven’t received a handwritten letter for years and very occasionally I get a postcard from friends who are traveling. Email has become the dominant medium of modern communications. About the importance of handwriting, it is particularly important in the IELTS test, which is organized in the form of ‘pencil and paper’ examination. Candidates are provided with a pencil and they need to hand write their answers on the sheet. In the writing section, one of the marking criteria is the legibility of the candidate’s handwriting. At the bottom of the writing answer sheet, there is a box that specifies this requirement. And if a candidate writes like a monkey, he or she will lose marks for his or her cacography. I think handwriting exposes one’s personality to the reader. One can be reserved, and the handwriting is usually small and tidy, or an extroverted person may write in a different style, usually the letters are big in size and fill all the given space.
