雅思词汇解析 | 天气（7）

1.cold snap /ˈkoʊld ˌsnæp/
a short period of cold weather 就是刚才说的气温骤降，一股寒流的意思。
口语话题中南方城市天气的时候：
Summers here are consistently hot and humid, whereas winters are mild, with occasional cold snaps. 夏季炎热潮湿，冬天温暖，但是偶尔也会温度骤降。
cold spell 也是指短期的温度骤降。
spell的意思大家注意下：A spell of a particular type of weather or a particular activity is a short period of time during which this type of weather or activity occurs.
e.g. The flowers died during a dry/cold spell. 这些花在干燥/寒冷的时期死掉了。
2. drizzle /'drɪz(ə)l/
v. /n. 下毛毛雨 / 毛毛雨，细雨蒙蒙。
e.g. It’s been drizzling on and off all day.
断断续续地下了一天小雨。
注：on and off 断断续续地，不时地，比如 The internet is on and off. 网络不稳定。
drizzle 用作名词时是可数名词。
e.g. It's raining, but it's only a drizzle.
e.g. The downpour ranges from light drizzles to heavy showers.
第二句话中，有几种下雨的表达呢?
Downpour和Heavy showers都是倾盆大雨的意思。
adj：drizzly 细雨蒙蒙的;
It is a drizzly, gray weekend.一个下雨阴沉沉的周末，突然就emo了。
3. unsettled /ʌn'set(ə)ld/
unsettled的意思大家都知道，指的是：悬而未决的
e.g. We have some unsettled business/issues to attend to. 我们有一些尚未了结的事务需要处理。
那么这个单词和天气有什么关系呢?
一起来看例子：The weather is quite unsettled and not quite sure what it’s going to do. It might rain, it might snow, the wind might blow. 可能下雨可能下雪可能刮风，所以这里unsettled 意思就是：天气多变的。
e.g. Despite the unsettled weather, we had a marvelous weekend. 尽管天气不好我们玩得开心。
4. breeze /briːz/
n. 微风;清风
这个单词大家应该都不陌生，常见的搭配：a gentle/soft/mild/fresh breeze.
e.g. The breeze rippled the water. 微风吹拂着水面泛起了涟漪。
我们也顺便说下这个单词的其他意思：
e.g. You won't have any problems with the entrance test - it's an absolute breeze.
= it is a piece of cake / cinch. 轻而易举的事情。
作为动词常常和through 搭配，如We breezed through the test/ task. 即轻而易举地完成了某件事。
