　　1. encyclopedia /en,saɪklə(ʊ)'piːdɪə/

　　n. 百科全书

　　e.g. This encyclopedia is crammed with information about everything under the sun.

　　e.g. A good encyclopedia is a mine of information.

　　补充：

　　mine of information: 信息源泉;信息宝库

　　under the sun: 世界上

　　be crammed with: 挤满;塞满

　　adj. encyclopedic 百科全书般的;知识丰富的

　　常见搭配：have an encyclopedic knowledge of 在…拥有渊博知识

　　e.g. She has an encyclopedic knowledge of natural history.

　　2. enlighten /ɪn'laɪt(ə)n/

　　v. 启发;启迪;开导

　　e.g. It’s beyond question that books can enrich our mind, enlighten our spirits, and enhance our life.

　　e.g. I used to hate science but after I met our current science teacher who is very experienced in teaching, I was so enlightened, and I started to get top marks in Math and Physics in my class.

　　adj. enlightening 有启发性的

　　e.g. We found the talk very enlightening.

　　e.g. It can be an enormously enlightening and exciting experience.

　　3. polyglot /'pɑlɪɡlɑt/

　　n. 通晓数种语言的人;

　　e.g. She was a polyglot who was fluent in four languages.

　　e.g. Thanks to his polyglot aptitude, he made rapid progress.

　　补充：poly- 前缀：多

　　polymath: n. 知识渊博的人

　　polygamous adj. 多配偶的

　　4. literate /'lɪt(ə)rət/

　　adj. 有读写能力的;受过教育的

　　e.g. Over one-quarter of the adult population are not fully literate.

　　e.g. Only highly literate people are capable of discussing these subjects.

　　adj.对…精通的;对…了解的

　　e.g. computer literate 电脑行家

　　e.g. financially literate 对理财有了解的

　　antonym: illiterate不识字的;文盲的;对…一无所知的

　　e.g. Most people fall into this trap all the time because they are financially illiterate.

　　e.g. A large percentage of the population is illiterate.

　　5. instill /in'stil/

　　v. 逐渐灌输(思想);逐渐培养(感情)

　　常见搭配：instill… in/into

　　e.g. They have instilled a love of music in their children.

　　e.g. The nursery teacher instilled the need for kindness into my children.
