A选项有因果逻辑，原因对应上了，但是结果与原文不符合，添加了要求其他食品也要进口，与原文不符合，学生选错是因为看到1选项与原句有很多的原词重复，我们更多要看的是句子的意思一致而不是看原词就可以。

D选项则是把原句中的结果当成了原因说，是属于因果倒置，所以不能选择。
正确思路:分析好句子主干，以及关注好句子的逻辑
分析句子主干的时候，先可以把修饰成分，比如介词短语，分词短语，从句先不看
主句的部分是Importing the grain kept the price of grain low and thus stimulated individual demand for other foodstuffs.,选项当中也就必须要包含进口谷物是价格低，因此刺激了对于其他食品的需求。
其中原因是进口谷物使价格降低，结果是刺激了对于其他食品的需求。

解析：对于句子简化题，我们需要关注句子的逻辑关系，高亮句有很明显的因果逻辑关系词result from起源于，可以知道原句的结构为 1部分 (The extreme seriousness of desertification )来源于 2(the vast areas of land ,3( tremendous numbers of people affected)4(the great difficulty of reversing or even slowing the process )，也就是说1 是结果，2，3，4部分三个并列的原因。
