Question
Your professor is teaching a class on sociology. Write a post responding to the professor’s question.
In your response, you should do the following.
- Express and support your opinion.
- Make a contribution to the discussion in your own words.
An effective response will contain at least 100 words.
Dr. Achebe
People travel for many reasons. Traveling allows people to practice a different language, explore and admire new landscapes, and encounter other cultures. In the past, physical travel was the only practical way to experience the pleasures and benefits of traveling. Today, television and the Internet allow people to experience many aspects of distant places without leaving their homes. Do you believe that exploring other places through technology offers many of the same benefits as in-person travel? Why or why not?
Claire
Absolutely, virtual travel offers many benefits of physical travel. Through the internet and TV, we can immerse ourselves in the sceneries, different cultures, and even pick up languages - all from home. It’s eco-friendly, cost-effective, and allows us to better prepare for an actual trip.
Andrew
I don’t believe exploring places through technology offers the same benefits as in-person travel. While virtual tours and online content give us a glimpse into different cultures, they fail to fully capture the sights, smells, sounds and feel of being there physically. It’s only a shallow substitute for the real thing.
I disagree that using technology to explore places provides the same advantages as traveling in person.【宾语从句】As Andrew mentioned, while technology can offer visual and auditory experiences, it is unable to match the depth of sensory engagement and cultural immersion gained from being physically present.【让步状语从句+分词短语】For instance, television and the internet offer glimpses of Tokyo’s bustling streets and landmarks, but these digital portrayals fall short of conveying the full experience of being there in person. During the day, standing at Shibuya Crossing, the world’s busiest intersection, allows travelers to truly feel the surge of people moving in every direction, surrounded by the sound of footsteps, the noise of vehicles, and the background music from advertising billboards.【动名词短语+插入语+分词短语】This on-site, immersive experience is something that cannot be fully captured through videos or online browsing.【定语从句+被动语态】At night, wandering through areas like Kabukicho provides an intriguing insight into Tokyo’s nightlife. Visitors can step into a small Japanese pub, or izakaya, sit on tatami mats, order snacks and drinks, and hear amusing anecdotes from the bartender or engage in conversations with locals and tourists alike. The combination of the glow of neon lights, the buzz of activity, and the unique stories shared in these intimate settings is an experience that digital media simply may not replicate.【定语从句】
“During the day, standing at Shibuya Crossing, the world’s busiest intersection, allows travelers to truly feel the surge of people moving in every direction, surrounded by the sound of footsteps, the noise of vehicles, and the background music from advertising billboards.”
“The combination of the glow of neon lights, the buzz of activity, and the unique stories shared in these intimate settings is an experience that digital media simply may not replicate.”
The executive team insists on discussing the merger details in person to ensure all concerns are addressed comprehensively.
immersion(沉浸,完全投入):immersive是它的形容词形式。
The students’ immersion in the science project led to a deeper understanding of the subject.
The documentary offers glimpses of the wildlife in the Amazon rainforest.
The city center was bustling with activity as people rushed to complete their holiday shopping.
Online articles frequently offer varied portrayals of current events, each with its own perspective.
the surge of people(人潮蜂拥):表示人群数量的突然增加或涌入。
There was a surge of people at the concert venue as soon as the gates opened.
The research paper provides an intriguing insight into the effects of artificial intelligence on job markets.
The café is buzzing with activity as people work on their laptops, enjoy their drinks, and chat with friends.
